Breaking norms and expectations to celebrate uniqueness and individuality.
Fragmented reflection. Is it a picture? Maybe. Is it an art object? Maybe. Is it product design? Maybe. Does it attract attention? 100%.
This wall decoration by Yvan De Becker features an original design divided into 12 glass plates (dimensions: 8 × 40 cm, 3 × 30 cm, 1 × 25 cm). Instead of traditional pictures, the design is fragmented and transferred to the back sides of reflective glass plates, creating a unique interplay of light and image.
Inspired by this year's Zagreb Design Week theme, "Breaking the Glass Ceiling: The Revolution of Design," this installation depicts an elusive and enigmatic androgynous personality with an obscure identity but a unique aura.
Displayed on shattered glass plates, this personality symbolizes the vulnerability and fragmentation felt by those who live outside societal norms. This is the first step in a series that celebrates diversity, showcasing characters on fragmented glass as a symbol of breaking expectations and creating strong individuality. The goal is to build a future where we embrace the unique aspects of ourselves and others.
Yvan De Becker moved to Croatia with his family more than fifteen years ago. Together with his partner Lotte, he founded a small design company called WallWare in Motovun, specializing in wall decorations inspired by old paintings on glass plates. Over time, customers began requesting increasingly diverse products. In the summer of 2024, Yvan felt the need to transfer his own designs onto large glass plates. This first series of designs is part of a larger collection that includes five unique plates.
