Transformation where old items become newer than new.
Normal — New Stories of Old Things is a design service that revives worn-out and unwanted furniture by incorporating modern design and functionality. This service aims to add value to discarded furniture by considering history, typology, condition, emotional value, and future user needs. The approach aligns with sustainable production, circular economy, and traditional elements, aiming to integrate heritage into everyday life. The feasibility of this approach was demonstrated through the transformation of four selected objects: a table, a TV stand, a chest of drawers, and a chair.
The table was revitalised by adding a metal table top and cutlery storage. The chest of drawers underwent a transformation involving partial scraping of the veneer, representing the object's past, present, and future. The TV stand was turned into a shelf system with rotating shelves created from wooden elements. Lastly, discarded sacks were repurposed to serve as the seat and backrest of the chair.
Valentin Domović was born in 2000 in Zagreb, where he graduated from the First Gymnasium in 2019, after which he enrolled in industrial design at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Architecture, Department - Design Studies. During his undergraduate and graduate studies, he participates in various projects and workshops in different areas of design. In 2022, as part of the Infoonica project - redesign of the computer classroom, created in collaboration with the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology, he won the Rector's Award for team scientific and artistic work in the field of translational research. During his studies, he actively exhibits and participates in the design of displays for individual and group works at Zagreb Design Week, DA festival, and at several exhibitions within the Gallery of Design Studies. He completes his undergraduate studies with honors, Summa cum laude, and will finish his master's studies in 2024 with excellent success.
