The name of the application - Phonix - comes from the words "phonetics" and "phoenix," the mythical bird that rises from the ashes and is reborn.

Project

Phonix is an innovative application designed to support individuals with reading and writing difficulties, including dyslexia. Dyslexia, a common learning disorder, significantly affects the acquisition of literacy skills, causing difficulties in fluent reading, spelling, and word decoding, which can negatively impact academic success and self-confidence. The name of our application, Phonix, is inspired by the word phonics and the mythological phoenix, a bird that rises from the ashes and is reborn.

The main features of the Phonix application include progress tracking and analytics, a text-to-speech library, and interactive educational games. The text-to-speech library uses Text-to-Speech technology that supports texts of various difficulty levels, from fairy tales to scientific articles, and also offers the option for users to input their own text. The interactive educational games include: a game where the user selects the correct word based on sound or image, a game where the user transcribes a paragraph after listening to it, and a letter-writing exercise based on machine learning. Progress tracking and analytics are based on the concept of "gamification," where users collect achievement medals and complete their usage calendar.

Additionally, the application offers various text settings, including font size, style, and background color, to accommodate the needs of users with dyslexia, reducing visual strain and improving reading speed. It also includes a phonetic spelling checker that recognizes and corrects misspelled words.

The JBGProductions team consists of four third-year students of Information Design at the Polytechnic University of Zagreb. The team's name comes from the first letters of the last names of all members: Karlo Jandrić, Borna Bagur, Filip Galijan, and Ivan Plenković. As part of the course "Design Practicum," led by Professor Ulla Leiner Maksan, M.A. des., these students participated in the Global Competition On Design For Future Education in Beijing. They competed in the "Inclusive Education" category, and the competition took place from March to June. In June, at the semifinals, they won the "Most Applicable Award" for their project.
