Elif Zeynep Atilla, a Cypriot-Bosnian-Herzegovinian, has designed jewelry to help you overcome anxiety.

Project

Elif Zeynep Atilla's project explores anxiety and the use of culturally significant materials. She chose copper, a material deeply rooted in Bosnian culture and craftsmanship. The goal was to create a product that serves as a grounding reminder, bringing the universe into the palm of your hand.
Through surveys and immersion in her target group's daily life, she discovered that holding someone's hand is a simple yet effective way to alleviate anxiety. This insight led to the concept of a hand-held object that provides comfort and a sense of connection.
The result is a piece of hand jewelry crafted from copper wires, designed to follow the natural lines of the hand. This piece not only holds aesthetic value but also serves a practical function, offering users a constant, comforting presence that they can carry with them.
This hand jewelry connects the user with the universe, a metaphor for holding the universe in the palm of your hand to make you feel grounded. We are one with the universe, and we can lend some of our worries to it. We may be small, but the universe is huge.

Author

Elif Zeynep Atilla was born in Northern Cyprus and moved to Bosnia and Herzegovina at age 10. Growing up, her father's job allowed her family to travel frequently, exposing her to diverse cultures. This experience ignited her passion for observing cultural differences and similarities, which later influenced her approach to design.

From a young age, she loved drawing and customizing her surroundings. Discovering product design was a pivotal moment, as it allowed her to channel her creativity into practical solutions. As a senior student at the Department of Product Design at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Sarajevo, she has embraced various approaches to design thinking over the past four years.

Collaborating with architects, craftsmen, and artists has been invaluable in shaping her understanding of good design. She believes that great design is human-centered and culturally influenced, understanding people's needs and working alongside them.

Design influences many aspects of her life, and she is passionate about its power to enhance user well-being and foster connections. Her curiosity and willingness to experiment have consistently placed her among the top students in her class.

Applying for the Social Innovation Design category at Zagreb Design Week aligns with her belief in using design as an innovation tool. She aims to explore speculative and applied concepts, raise important questions, and develop solutions that emphasize its users.
