Perception Peculiar is shaped by the interpretation derived from perception, manifesting itself in visual work and closely linking with the sociocultural environment of the shared territory between Tijuana and San Diego, which is intrinsically Peculiar. Border thinking has been the subject of study in various disciplines and moments throughout the visual history of the binational region between Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, and San Diego, California, USA. From a professional perspective, it is valuable to explore graphic design and illustration in the period 2010-2020. This exhibition represents the regional talent, recognised collectively, giving the opportunity to perceive and reflect on its geographic and semantic particularity, that is, from its multiple meanings. This distinctive territory is the result of the constant exchange between two countries, a daily interaction that permeates and defines the peculiarity of its development and social configuration. This peculiarity is manifested in languages, its evolution, the experience of border crossing, cultural appropriation, political reflections, and exploration in culinary, visual, and artistic fields.

For the curatorship of Percepción Peculiar, it was essential to foster dialogues that can broaden the vision of what it means to be on the border. The exhibition features a gallery of 24 participants, a discussion panel at San Diego Design Week, and two playlists. The first, a musical exploration that fuses mixes and textures from different parts of the world in the music of Tijuana and the second that focusses on the present and past of the music of San Diego and Tijuana, another valuable connection shared by this territory. In addition, a website is presented as a virtual gallery, conceived to open conversations about the peculiar perception of transiting, living, and creating from this border territory, guided by three fundamental questions: How do you define the TJ-SD region? How do you define your work? How is the geographic context (TJ-SD region) reflected in your work?
