Runway trends never influenced Vivienne Westwood—she was always driven by her own particular obsessions. Dubbed the "Mother of Punk," Vivienne designed all the Sex Pistols' outfits, helping to shape the aesthetic of the entire punk rock movement. When the band split up, Vivienne was torn about the direction of her fashion and creations. On one hand, she wanted to build on the momentum gained from working with the group, but on the other, she wanted to establish an identity of her own.
In 1981, Vivienne and Malcolm McLaren made their debut at London Fashion Week with a collection called Pirates. And the rest, as they say, is history. Vivienne Westwood has dominated the fashion industry since the 1980s, leaving a lasting impact on both the fashion world and culture at large. While her supermodel moments were legendary, it was Westwood's political and fashion stances that made her truly punk. She warned of climate change, opposed fracking, defended controversial figures, and engaged in media-savvy stunts to promote her favorite causes long before the designer-turned-activist trend emerged. Her name is revered not only in the fashion industry but around the world.
