Is brutality only expressed through graphic violence, or is it hidden in plain sight, embedded in the performance of luxury? This experimental edition of American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis depicts violence through a mask of normality. The satirical novel is narrated from the perspective of Patrick Bateman, a New York banker and serial killer. As Bateman says, “The inside doesn’t matter”, a statement exposing our culture’s obsession with surface-level status symbols.
This designed experimental book is encased in luxurious packaging, like a premium product that relies not on the novel’s content but on a purely superficial interpretation of its themes. All the products mentioned in the book are highlighted with photographs and real prices, visually encouraging the reader to embody Bateman’s lifestyle. At first glance, the project appears to affirm superficiality and luxury, but it in fact banalizes them and reflects on today’s real-world examples of a culture that, without critique, takes Patrick Bateman as a role model. The violence and horrifying content of the novel are pushed into the background, concealed by designer goods and an illusion of beauty.
Martina Ramljak is a third-year student at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Architecture, School of Design. During her studies, she actively participates in various external student projects in the field of design. In 2024, she became a member of the Architecture and Design Students’ Club and an organizer of the 9th DA! Festival, a student festival of architecture, art and design, where she and her colleagues created the visual identity, guest program and promotional materials. In the field of video game design and visual narrative, she and her team won first prize at the first Croatian Unizg Global Game Jam in 2024. From 2025, she began exploring alternative and analog processes and won third prize in the fine arts category at the 10th DA! Festival. Within faculty activities and in collaboration with external partners, she leads workshops for high school students on experimentation and creating visuals using alternative methods. In June, she exhibited her poster at the latest edition of EDUzgraf, an international educational platform for graphic design and visual communications, on the theme (Dis)pleasure to All. Along with exhibiting her work, she participated in the three-day EDUzgraf workshop Space for All, Pleasure for All. She is currently involved in various projects and devotes her time to further process experimentation within design, often using the online pseudonym Absurd Attempts.
