Women Who Walk the World is conceived and designed as a book-monument dedicated to victims of femicide. The cover, inspired by the Wall of Pain memorial, is embossed with the real names of victims from Croatia and the region, transforming the cover into a space of remembrance, responsibility, and long-denied visibility. The victims’ names take precedence over the author and title, making the book a collective testimony.
Inside, the design deliberately avoids classical pagination, pages are numbered in reverse from 140 to 0, representing the average number of women and girls killed daily by intimate partners or family members (UN Women and UNODC). This design choice emphasizes the urgency and target goal: zero violence. Each number is accompanied by a red dot, a visual signifier of lives lost and the need for immediate action.
Each poem is paired with an illustration by academic painter and illustrator Valentina Talijan. These black-and-white plant illustrations were carefully chosen to symbolically reflect the poems’ themes, healing, protection, trauma, and remembrance. They are not mere decoration, but visual extensions of the collection’s message: layered reminders of women's pain, strength, and resistance across time and space.
