An ambient light with organic form and calming orange glow

Project

The Armadillo Lamp is an ambient lamp that creates a sense of calm and serenity with its warm orange light filtering through a translucent lampshade. The shade’s organic shape is formed by a series of semi-transparent overlapping circles inspired by the segmented shell of an armadillo. The flickering light and occasional fluttering of the layered elements add a mystical atmosphere.
The overlapping design mimics the armadillo’s flexible armor that allows movement and curling, enabling the lampshade to bend and shift gently, enhancing its organic character. The shade sits on a wooden base that symbolizes the armadillo’s life connected to the earth, reinforcing the design’s natural theme. The power cord is wrapped in white rope to soften the contrast with the rest of the lamp. Excess cord can be tucked under the base, maintaining a clean look and reducing the risk of tripping.

Author

Leda Krstulović-Opara is a second-year undergraduate student of Industrial Design at the School of Design, Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb. Her work explores the relationship between form, lighting, and space, with a strong focus on functionality. She is particularly interested in shaping light as a medium for creating atmosphere and spatial dynamics, as well as the interplay between materials, forms, and light effects. Simple, organic shapes are recurring motifs in her designs, always accompanied by a clear functional purpose and practical execution.
