A stool–installation that merges tradition and 3D printing to reflect on microplastic’s impact on nature

Project

The project CELL explores the topic of microplastics and their impact on the environment. Through research, the author discovered that microplastics reach plants, trees, and crops and can halt their growth—an insight that inspired the shape of this chair: a low auxiliary stool produced with 3D printing. The design draws from the history of Croatian household furniture and traditional stools but modernizes the form with a circular seat and sturdy legs. The inspiration comes from microscopic images of wood tissue, combining shapes like circles, ellipses, and triangles and colors such as pink, red, and purple into a pattern that wraps around the stool. This structure reflects microscopic patterns, shaping a new 3D furniture piece intended as an installation that invites reflection on microplastics. The concept narrates the interaction between microplastics and wood as an inspiration for shape and aesthetics. The outer surface features purple and pink, while the interior is yellow-green, symbolizing the toxic microplastic hidden inside the wood. The chair consists of eight parts, is lightweight and can be printed at home using recycled filament. Holes on the surface help reduce weight and make it easier to carry. This project highlights the issue of microplastics and opens a speculative space for reconciling ecology and technology.
