The Sail chair is inspired by sailing and the associations it brings—freedom, relaxation, and rest. The goal was to materialize the feeling of open-sea sailing into a functional object that evokes the experience through comfort, aesthetics, and character.
The structure consists of four interwoven elements of the same shape but with different leg dimensions. The weaving of stainless steel rods draws inspiration from knot-tying techniques used in sailing ropes. The seat, resembling a lightweight sail, does not touch the frame, giving a floating effect.
This form enables various sitting positions and combinations. The cover is easy to remove, wash, and replace. The Sail chair is also a homage to the iconic Butterfly chair, which significantly influenced the author's design thinking during his studies in industrial design. The project merges personal insights with the principles of that icon, reinterpreting a familiar typology in a new and personal way.
Sven Sladojević is a student at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Architecture, School of Design. Prior to his university education, he completed the Natural Sciences and Graphic School in Rijeka. He is particularly interested in industrial design, especially in the fields of technology products and toys.
During his studies, he participated in numerous exhibitions, including faculty shows and the DA! Festival. Together with his colleague Petar Cherchi, he won the Small Ideas competition organized by Volvo Croatia in collaboration with the School of Design.
What motivates him in design is the awareness that small changes can have a positive impact on everyday life. He strives for functionality and attention to detail, creating products that are both aesthetically appealing and user-oriented.
