Exhibition catalogue Family and Household: The Fluttery Everyday Life of Dušan Bekar

Project

The exhibition Family and Household: The Fluttery Everyday Life of Dušan Bekar, held at the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum in Zagreb in autumn 2024, presented for the first time numerous fragments from the rich œuvre of art director Dušan Bekar. The idea for this retrospective emerged from a lesser-known fact, Bekar created the visual identity for the first international Family and  Household exhibition held in 1957 at the same venue as part of the Zagreb Autumn Fair (and again in 1958 and 1960). His award-winning poster design featured a meander-house drawn in a single stroke, which became the emblem of the event and a key visual in its promotional materials. Thematically, the exhibition echoed the 1957 show, which focused on organizing family life in newly developed urban settings. A Children’s Fair was also part of the exhibition, aimed at meeting the needs of the youngest citizens. From a design perspective, the catalogue communicates text and imagery in a clear and accessible way, minimizing visual noise. The color palette draws directly from  the original billboards, while the typography references modernized typefaces from the period.
