Project

The Artist is No Longer an Artist, He Is an Engineer (of Art) is an animation paying tribute to Slovene artist Avgust Černigoj by reinterpreting his Constructivist legacy through digital media. Inspired by his radical views on form, space, and precision, the work reflects on the evolving role of the artist in a technological age.

Central to the piece is the phrase “Umetnik ni več umetnik, je inženir” (The artist is no longer an artist; he is an engineer), which visually unfolds through animated typography. Words like “ni” (not) and “več” (anymore) morph into “je” (is), challenging viewers to rethink meaning and perspective.

A paint roller applies color to both wall and canvas, blurring medium and message. A chain-driven clock and metronome introduce mechanical rhythm and engineered time. The red column from Černigoj’s Lipica gallery adds structure and historical reference.

Černigoj appears as a figure turning the chain, manipulating time and form. The fusion of 2D and 3D elements embodies Constructivist ideals while embracing digital tools.

This work is a call to preserve artistic heritage by bridging history with contemporary expression — affirming that art evolves, and that engineering and creativity are no longer opposites, but partners in shaping the future.

Oskar Miketič, also known as Osky, designs under the name Oblikovalsky. He is a Slovenian design student who combines formal education with growing hands-on experience. After finishing the Secondary School for Design and Photography in Ljubljana (graphic design), he gained practical experience in a marketing agency and is now studying at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, University of Ljubljana (program: Graphic and Media Technology).

He is currently coordinating the design team for the 18th Fanfara, a student-led marketing conference in Slovenia. In 2024, he contributed to the visual identity of the 17th Fanfara, creating various materials such as banners, posters, motion graphics, and social media visuals. As a member of the design team at the Student Section of the Slovenian Marketing Association (ŠSDMS), he helps with visual content for campaigns and presentations.

Oskar draws inspiration from minimalism, constructivism, brutalism, and other visual languages. He is influenced by his surroundings and design history, with a strong appreciation for detail and meaningful composition. He believes design elements should resonate on more than one level, even in simple executions. His work is marked by a strong sense of detail and a desire for meaningful visual connections and symbolism. For him, every design element must carry meaning, with interwoven layers that resonate on multiple levels.
