The Akrus bench is made of metal, emphasizing clean, simple lines and functionality. Its form follows a curved motion, creating a structure that is both solid and dynamic; inviting use and allowing for various sitting positions.
What makes the bench special is its modularity: multiple units can be combined in floor plans to create different compositions, adapting to the context of the space and users' needs. Movable wooden elements, placed within the metal frame, serve as flexible surfaces for sitting or placing objects. Their movement introduces playfulness and interactivity into the everyday use of the object. This gamified element is inspired by the abacus, a counting tool, further reinforcing the bench’s connection to rhythm, dynamics and user participation in shaping their own seating experience.
Ana Dilger-Pintarić is a student at the School of Design, Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb, currently completing the third year of the undergraduate program in Industrial Design. Their work explores the boundaries between functional objects and spatial installations, with a particular interest in user interaction with objects and the environment. They are especially interested in design that fosters dialogue—whether through play, spatial presence, or the potential for user customization.
