Within a rigid apartment envelope, a flexible, transformable interior is created – ready to respond to a variety of living scenarios. The central service zone is clad in a warm wooden shell, opening up the rest of the apartment for daily use.
On one side lies the living area, on the other the sleeping zone – with soft, movable, and permeable boundaries. Curtains become architectural tools: defining and dissolving space based on immediate needs.
By shifting the curtains, the apartment transforms into a set of new spaces – a small room, theatre, play zone, work nook, or home cinema.
The result is a living environment that encourages exploration, a playful and ever-adaptable space that evolves with the life rhythms of its inhabitants.
ZBIR studio was founded in 2021 by Antonija and Matija, both born in 1995 in Osijek and Zagreb. They met at the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb and graduated in 2020. During their studies, they expanded their creative scope to scenography, costume design, photography, and product design.
They participated in projects such as the opera Così fan Tutte (HNK Zagreb, 2018) and Ubu Roi (Prague Quadrennial, 2019), earning Rector’s Awards for large-scale collaborative artistic works.
In 2018, they launched the design notebook brand Bilja, a finalist at the 2021 Zagreb Design Week in the product design category. Their work was exhibited at the 35th Youth Salon (2020), 56th Zagreb Salon of Architecture (2021), and the Piran Days of Architecture (2021), where they received an international student commendation.
In 2023, the studio received an honourable mention in the Europan 17 competition and won second prize in the urban-architectural competition for the redesign of Vlaška Street in Zagreb.
