Renovation of an Apartment in Ulica grada Vukovara

Project

This project transforms a 94 m² one-bedroom apartment into a two-bedroom layout (or a combination of bedroom and workspace).

Upon entering, a long corridor leads toward the living area. The corridor, free of loose furniture, offered an opportunity to experiment with built-in architectural forms. Wooden cabinetry is designed as abstract elements that disguise their utility functions. These are placed like islands between light sources, with faceted forms allowing for permeability and ease of movement. A full-height mirror visually expands the corridor by reflecting spatial elements.

The corridor opens into a continuous open-plan kitchen, living room, and studio space extending from the rear to the front façade – ensuring rare dual natural lighting, which the designers preserved while optimizing space use.

A translucent wall separates the studio, providing visual privacy while still allowing light to pass through. It consists of fixed frosted glass and wooden window frames that function as an internal façade – maintaining openness and enabling airflow. At night, the translucent partition glows, becoming a luminous architectural feature within the apartment.

Author

Studio STA is an architectural studio based in Zagreb and Bangkok, founded by Petra Tikulin and Asrin Sanguanwongwan.

Petra, a Croatian architect, has worked between Croatia and Italy throughout her career. From 2012 to 2017, she specialized in hospitality design with the UK-based Scott Brownrigg studio in its Croatian branch. She later moved to Milan to work on exhibition design projects and currently teaches Design Methodology at NABA (Nuova Accademia Di Belle Arti di Milano).

Asrin, originally from Bangkok, worked at All(Zone) from 2013 to 2018, focusing on lightweight, tropical-climate architecture. He was the lead architect on the MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum in Chiangmai and designed various exhibition projects for the same museum.

Petra and Asrin met in 2017 during a collective exhibition at Triennale di Milano (999 Questions on Contemporary Living), and in 2019 they combined their experiences to establish Studio STA.
