Exhibition design for ZGRAF 13

TIME MACHINE – Exhibition Design for ZGRAF 13

ZGRAF is never a singular exhibition fixed in one place or time—and ZGRAF 13 is no exception. The design and spatial concept for this edition is rooted in two key dimensions: time and space.

Temporally, ZGRAF unfolds sporadically, echoing in intervals across decades. Spatially, it occupies the circular layout of the recently renovated French Pavilion in Zagreb’s Student Centre.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of ZGRAF, the exhibition design takes the form of a time machine — a spatial narrative shaped through modular, oversized elements inspired by gears, sprockets, and mechanical parts. These appear intermittently throughout the pavilion, referencing ZGRAF’s historical rhythm and offering visitors a layered spatial experience.

Each segment corresponds to one of eight graphic design categories. Originally conceived in steel for durability and reusability, the segments were eventually realized in black cardboard — lightweight, sustainable, and minimalist. The monochrome approach allows graphic works — posters, digital pieces, and artifacts — to stand at the visual forefront, with the structure serving purely as support.
