Institution

The Faculty of Graphic Arts, University of Zagreb, is a higher education institution that, through undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate study programs, educates experts equipped to meet contemporary challenges in the fields of graphic technology, packaging, visual communications, and multimedia. Teaching is based on a research-oriented approach, practical work, and collaboration with industry, while students are encouraged to critically reflect on the role of design in everyday life and in society as a whole. In this spirit, by participating in the exhibition Realities We Share, the students of the Faculty of Graphic Arts present their solutions aimed at fostering connection, communication, and understanding within the complex world that surrounds us.

Exhibition

The theme of this year’s exhibition, Realities We Share, reminds us that what we call reality is never unambiguous. Each of us carries our own perspective, our own experience, our own filter through which we observe the world. Yet despite these differences, we all share the need to be connected, to understand, and to be understood. Design helps us in this – it translates the abstract into the tangible, the unfamiliar into the familiar, the personal into the universal.

The students participating in this exhibition offer us insight into their ways of thinking across different fields of design – each project is a small world of its own, yet all share one common thread: the desire to tell a story that makes sense, that moves us, and that stays with us. Through colors, materials, typography, and form, packaging conveys the story of the origin, purpose, and identity of what lies within. In their presented works, students explore how packaging can communicate sustainability, authenticity, or recognizability, always searching for ways to visually express what a product “says” without words. In visual identity projects, every line, contrast, shape, or typographic choice carries meaning. The identities created by the students are not merely “beautiful” – they speak of character, of values, and they create a sense of recognition. A strong identity, like a good story, stays with us – we recognize it even before we rationally understand it. Multimedia works and mobile applications open up spaces for interaction – they cannot exist without an audience. Here, design becomes a bridge between technology and people, a means through which functionality takes form, and user experience becomes just as important as the content itself. The photographs on display invite us to introspection, to revisiting similar moments from our own lives. Through them, students open a window into their world – or perhaps into ours, the one we may have forgotten to notice.

The realities we share are often neither grand nor spectacular. They are not necessarily big questions or difficult debates. They are hidden in small moments of recognition, in the feeling that “this makes sense,” even if we cannot immediately explain why. Sometimes they are simply images that make us pause for a moment. Words that are exactly where they need to be. Colors that remind us of something familiar. Or simply the sense that someone, somewhere, has thought about what we feel too, and has translated it into something visible.

Step into the worlds that the students of the Faculty of Graphic Arts have transformed into form, color, sound, and story.

Come, be inspired, and perhaps recognize a part of your own reality among them!
