The Bernardo Bernardi Gallery, located in the building of the Zagreb Open University, formerly the Moša Pijade Workers’ University, constructed in 1961 according to the design of architects Radovan Nikšić and Ninoslav Kučan in the tradition of the Zagreb Circle of Architecture modernism, showcases contemporary domestic and international design. In parallel with the architectural project, a conceptual solution for the building’s furniture and equipment was developed under the guidance of Bernardi Bernardi, emphasizing the connection between architecture and furnishings and the synthesis of all arts in spatial creation. Bernardi’s original furniture remains in use today, attesting to enduring quality and aesthetic value.
In 2025, the gallery presents a broader context: Slovenian designer Tobias Putrih, with bases in Ljubljana and Cambridge, Massachusetts, exhibits the modular personalized furniture series “Stick,” engaging closely with the audience. Simultaneously, in the CEKAO Gallery, Berlin-based artist Timo Herbst, with an address in Paris, explores space with the project Common Places, in collaboration with MSU Zagreb. Together, these projects reflect perceptions of design and artistic practice beyond the local context.
The Bernardo Bernardi Gallery is situated in the heart of Zagreb, in a building that represents both architectural and cultural modernist heritage. Bernardi’s design within the building includes several specific series of elements, introducing a refined Scandinavian design vocabulary to Croatia, and highlighting the importance of a holistic approach to space. Since 2012, the gallery has continuously showcased contemporary domestic designers, establishing itself as a meeting point of tradition and modern design.
