Selfi is a product designed for the psychological and social well—being of its user/creator. It is a hand—embroidered self—portrait, made by each individual following the instructions of the Oloop Collective. By spreading the Selfi embroidery community through the web and social networks the Oloop collective promotes the importance of connection, belonging and collaboration. Selfi also challenges the internet culture of selfies, as it is created through a process of slowed down, contemplative, handmade creation. The product was developed in 2019 to co—create with immigrant women from different cultural backgrounds (Albania, Northern Macedonia, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Morocco, Syria, Palestine and South America), as its production promotes well—being, encourages reflection and has a meditative effect. The work has a psychological value for its creator and the aesthetic and useful value of the portrait as an object. The Oloop Collective guided immigrant women to focus on the positive sides of themselves. Therefore, the colors in which the self—portraits were made symbolized the important personal virtues of the creators, of which they were particularly proud. In general, textile activities promote creativity, a sense of accomplishment, and joy, which is especially important for people who no longer experience these feelings in other areas of their lives. Textile and craft activities can restore lost feelings of pride, enthusiasm, and happiness.
Oloop Collective was founded in 2003. It works in the field of participatory, social and well—being design. The collective connects design with socially engaged projects to raise awareness of the importance of craft/design and their impact on the well—being of individuals and communities. Oloop has participated in the most important Slovenian design exhibitions, including: New Times: Milano Design Week, 2022; The Future of Living: Zagreb Design Week and Dutch Design Week, Eindhoven, 2021; 34th Graphic Biennale Ljubljana, 2021; Tunel 29, Milano Design Week, 2021; XXII Triennale Di Milano, 2019; Vienna Design Week, 2019; Udine Design Week, 2018. Oloop Collective has received international recognition and several awards, such as the Red Dot Concept Award 2007; The Biennale of Industrial Design Ljubljana Praise 2006; Alpine Pluralism Award Winner 2018; DOS Award 2019, Design Achievement; The “Made in Slovenia” mark of excellence 2020 and 2021. The following Oloop products — Woolen Soap, Flying Slippers and Squareplay — are part of the permanent national collection at the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana. Since 2010, Oloop has been connecting textile design with the empowerment and social well—being of migrant women. Notable projects in recent years include Revealed Hands (2012-2017) and Active Relationships (2019-2022).
