By-product of by-product. In the time of fast fashion and greenwashing, this is a dedication to leather as a long-lasting, unique, hard-to-replace, and biodegradable material. Leather is a by-product of the meat industry and animals are not killed for their skin. Leather products are long-lasting, unlike products made from environmentally harmful synthetic materials, which are often promoted as an "eco" alternative to leather.
Just as leather is a by-product of the meat industry, this unique bag is a by-product of my own production because it is entirely made from the smallest scraps of leather. All pieces of leather that are leftovers from the preparation and manufacture of bags, backpacks, and belts, and were not usable for making jewelry or compositions applied to bags, backpacks, or belts, are woven into this unique bag.
Ruke Design is a Croatian slow fashion brand founded in 2007 in Makarska. Ruke Design offers unique and timeless leather fashion accessories, bags, backpacks, belts, and jewelry, recognizable for its quality and unique artistic design. Behind the Ruke Design brand is the designer Marija Ivanković, who is the sole designer and maker of all her products. Her work is recognizable for its colorful geometric compositions, play of colors and textures, as well as unique structural solutions with solid and clear lines. In addition to leather as the primary material, the designer often uses other materials such as wood, aluminum, plexiglass, and rubber in her work. She advocates for sustainable production and produces almost no waste in her work with leather because all the small pieces of leather that remain after the preparation and making of bags, backpacks, or belts are used in jewelry making and in compositions applied to bags, backpacks, and belts. She showed her works at the fashion weeks in Zagreb, Belgrade, and Ljubljana, and at the international exhibition of contemporary jewelry in Milan. She lives and creates in Makarska.
