With its continuous operation since 1889, the Zagreb Botanical Garden is the oldest and main botanical garden in Croatia. Since its foundation, it has been part of the Botanical Institute of the Faculty of Science. It is proud of its exotic plants from all over the world and is a legally protected monument of park architecture. As an institution, the Botanical Garden has a documented collection of living plants that serves scientific research, biodiversity conservation and education. It is available to the public with rules of conduct that protect its collection and preserve plantations – botanical gardens are not public parks but “open-air museums”.
