The Sarajevo Memory Book emerged from a collection initiated in 2012 by the Association of Parents of Murdered Children of the Siege of Sarajevo. Over time, the collection transformed into a dedicated space of memory. The name Memory Book refers to a recurring object found in family archives – intimate and emotional, preserving traces of childhood.
The exhibition uses spatial design as a medium of storytelling. It is arranged in two connected rooms with a total area of 55.5 m². The smaller room introduces the theme; the larger houses the core of the exhibition – the memory box, a central spatial installation that offers two distinct experiences through its layered design.
The first layer, a glass element, contains drawers holding personal belongings of the murdered children. Its reflective surface mirrors the walls covered with collages made from authentic children’s drawings, quotes, and thoughts, guiding visitors through children’s reflections on war, peace, love, fear, and play. The collage forms the silhouette of Sarajevo, with a gradient shift from light to dark following the emotional arc of the exhibition.
Inside the memory box are portraits of the children – the original authors of the drawings – presented in silence, without labels. It is a space of contemplation, where the visitor remains alone with emotion, memory, and the question: how can design preserve what must never be forgotten?
Samina Tanović, author of the spatial and visual design and art director of the project, was born in 1981 in Sarajevo. She graduated in Product Design from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo. Since 2006, she has worked as a television set designer and is now art director, responsible for the development and coordination of visual and spatial identities.
She is also active in theatre, interior, and furniture design, focusing on spaces that require creative, unique, and functional solutions. She is the author of numerous exhibitions and the recipient of several awards, including two Grand Prix awards from Collegium Artisticum. Her practice is particularly dedicated to museums and spaces of remembrance. She is currently president of the Association of Applied Artists and Designers of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ULUPUBiH).
Elma Hodžić is the curator of the Sarajevo Memory Book exhibition. An art historian and curator at the History Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, she authored the museological concept based on years of research, data collection, and conversations with the parents of the children who were killed.
The collage, a key element of the exhibition, was developed from children’s drawings, thoughts, and emotions. It was visually designed by students of Graphic Design at the Academy of Fine Arts Sarajevo: Una Mazrak, Kristina Krunić, Martina Reč, and Sajra Zulčić, under the mentorship of Prof. Bojan Hadžihalilović and Assistant Vanesa Prodanović Durmišević.
